Shopify has built a setting that does something unusual: it doesn't just connect your store to today's AI shopping tools, it automatically connects you to whatever AI shopping partners Shopify signs up next. If you don't go in and turn it off, you're opted into deals that don't exist yet.
The setting, part of what Shopify calls its agentic storefronts program, currently shares merchant product catalogs with Meta and a handful of unnamed AI startups. These companies use the data to let their AI tools recommend, compare, or even complete purchases of a merchant's products without the shopper ever visiting the actual store. The setting appears to be on by default for many merchants, meaning store owners need to actively check their admin settings to see whether they're enrolled.
What makes this different from a typical app integration is the forward-looking scope. Normally, a merchant agrees to share data with one specific partner for one specific purpose. Here, agreeing once appears to cover an open-ended list that grows over time as Shopify strikes new partnerships. Merchants are effectively pre-authorizing relationships with companies that haven't been named yet.
Shopify has positioned this as a way to keep its merchants visible as shopping increasingly happens through AI assistants instead of search engines or browsers. The company has been building toward this for a while, including earlier moves to make product data readable by AI systems and to support checkout flows that AI agents can complete on a customer's behalf.
