Google is giving outside AI assistants a direct line into the devices connected to Google Home โ cameras, locks, thermostats, lights โ through a new early-access connector. For a small business owner who has wired a shop or office with Nest cameras or smart locks, this means an AI chatbot could soon check who came by after hours or lock up for the night, just by being asked in plain language.
The new connector uses a technology called MCP, short for Model Context Protocol. Think of it as a translation layer that lets AI models talk to outside software and devices without a developer having to build a custom integration for every single app. Anthropic introduced MCP in late 2024, and since then it has become something of a common language across the AI industry, with OpenAI, Microsoft, and now Google building support for it into their products.
With this rollout, AI agents such as Claude and ChatGPT can, in early access, view summaries of camera footage, check the status of connected devices, and issue commands like turning off lights or adjusting a thermostat โ all through natural language rather than tapping through an app. Google is treating this as an early access program rather than a full launch, meaning availability and features are likely to shift before any broad release.
This is not Google's first attempt to make its smart home ecosystem programmable. The company has offered developer APIs and an Assistant SDK for years, but those required technical setup and were mostly used by hobbyists and integrators. What is new here is that any AI agent supporting MCP can plug in with far less custom engineering, which lowers the bar considerably for who can build or use these connections.
The move fits into a broader industry pattern: AI companies are racing to give their models the ability to act in the physical and digital world, not just answer questions. Over the past year, agentic features have crept into email, calendars, spreadsheets, and now home hardware. Each of these expansions follows a similar arc โ a narrow early access period, followed by wider rollout, followed eventually by monetization once usage patterns become clear. Google already charges for advanced Nest Aware camera features, so it would not be surprising if premium AI-agent capabilities end up behind a similar paywall later.
For small businesses using Google Home or Nest hardware for security or building management, the practical upside is modest but real: fewer app-switching headaches, and the ability to get a quick answer or issue a command through whatever AI assistant is already part of the workday. A shop owner who already uses ChatGPT or Claude for scheduling or customer emails could, in theory, ask the same assistant to check the back-door camera.
The trade-off is access control. Handing an AI agent the ability to view camera footage or unlock doors introduces a new point of failure โ misread commands, third-party data handling, and unclear audit trails if something goes wrong. Businesses that rely on smart locks or cameras for actual security, rather than convenience, should treat this as an optional add-on to evaluate carefully, not a default to switch on.
Watch for three things in the coming months: whether Google offers granular permissions that let an agent view camera summaries without also granting lock or thermostat control; whether Amazon or Apple respond with similar MCP support for Alexa or HomeKit; and whether this early access period leads to a subscription tier, following the pattern set by Nest Aware.
For now, this is an early access feature, not a finished product. Business owners with Google Home devices installed should hold off granting broad agent permissions until Google clarifies how access controls, logging, and data handling will work at scale.
