Anthropic just changed how its Claude assistant behaves inside Slack, and the change says as much about where AI vendors think the money is as it does about the technology itself. The update lets Claude read entire conversation threads and, in some cases, jump in without anyone tagging it first.

Until now, most workplace AI tools have followed a simple rule: they wait to be asked. You type a prompt, you get a response, the tool goes quiet. There's also a data and governance angle worth weighing. Giving an AI persistent read access to full Slack conversations โ€” not just messages directed at it โ€” means broader exposure to internal discussions, client details, and anything else that gets typed in a channel. Before turning this on, it's worth checking what admin controls exist to limit which channels Claude can see and whether its responses in a channel are visible to everyone or just the person it's responding to.
