The biggest AI companies have decided that a browser tab isn't good enough anymore. In the past few months, Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic have each rolled out or overhauled dedicated desktop applications, moving their chatbots off the web and onto your actual operating system.

Google recently launched a Gemini app for Mac, alongside a Windows app that folds Gemini into its broader Google app. OpenAI took its Codex tool, originally built for programmers, and turned it into a general-purpose desktop app for all ChatGPT users, retiring the older ChatGPT desktop app in the process. Anthropic has its own Claude desktop app pushing in the same direction. None of these tools do anything you couldn't already do by opening a browser and logging in.

What's different is access. A desktop app can sit in your system tray, launch with a keyboard shortcut, read files directly off your hard drive, and in some cases see what's on your screen or control other applications. That's a meaningfully deeper level of integration than typing into a chat window at chatgpt.com.

This isn't a new playbook. Slack, Zoom, and Spotify all made the same jump from browser to desktop app years ago, betting that permanent access on your machine would drive more frequent use and make the tool harder to abandon. AI companies appear to be running that same play, just faster and with higher stakes given how much these tools already know about your work.

The pattern matters because desktop presence is a proxy war for something bigger: which AI assistant becomes the default layer between you and your computer. Microsoft has been building Copilot directly into Windows. Apple has its own AI ambitions baked into macOS. Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic don't control the operating system, so a standalone app is their workaround for staying in front of you all day, not just when you remember to open a tab.

For small businesses, the practical trade-off is convenience versus exposure. A desktop AI app that can read local files or see your screen is genuinely useful for tasks like summarizing a folder of contracts or pulling data out of a spreadsheet without copy-pasting. But it also means a third-party company's software has a standing presence on machines that likely hold client records, financial data, or proprietary work.

Before installing any of these apps company-wide, it's worth checking what permissions they request and whether your existing data policies even address desktop AI tools. Many small businesses have security policies written around web apps and email, with no language covering an AI assistant with file-system access. This is also a good moment to check what each app's admin or business tier controls, since permissions and data-retention settings often differ from the consumer version.

Cost is another consideration. These apps are currently free extensions of existing subscriptions, but the browser-to-app transition in other software categories has historically preceded feature walls and pricing tiers once user habits are locked in. There's no indication yet that Google, OpenAI, or Anthropic plan to charge separately for desktop access, but the free period rarely lasts forever in this industry.

Watch for two things in the coming months: whether these companies start gating desktop-only features behind paid plans, and whether Microsoft or Apple respond by making it harder for third-party AI apps to get the same system-level access their own built-in assistants enjoy. Either move would signal where this competition is really headed.

For now, the desktop app itself doesn't do anything the browser version can't. The real change is how much access you're granting, and whether your business has actually decided that's a trade you want to make, rather than defaulting into it because the app was easy to install.
